Spice it up! This easy-to-make spin on apple pie uses Chinese five-spice powder. Topped with creamy vanilla yoghurt, this dessert is sure win 'em over.
Ingredient List
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour, plus additional for sprinkling
- 1 refrigerated pie crust, softened as directed on box
- 1/4 cup cold butter, finely diced
- 1/2 cup Mountain High® original vanilla yoghurt
- 1-inch piece fresh gingerroot, grated (2 teaspoons)
- 3 tablespoons honey
- 1 tablespoon Chinese five-spice powder
- 1/8 teaspoon salt
- 3 large baking apples, peeled, cut into 1/2-inch chunks (about 4 cups)
- 3/4 cup Mountain High® original vanilla yoghurt
Preparation
- Heat oven to 450°F. Line cookie sheet with sides with cooking parchment paper.
- Lightly sprinkle work surface with flour. On work surface, roll pie crust into 12-inch circle. Transfer to cookie sheet.
- In large bowl, stir together 1/4 cup flour, the butter, yoghurt, gingerroot, honey, Chinese five-spice powder and salt. Add apples, and toss to coat. Spoon mixture on center of crust, leaving 2-inch border. Fold edge of crust over apple mixture, pleating to fit.
- Bake 30 to 35 minutes or until apples are tender and crust is golden. Cool slightly, about 1 hour. Cut into 10 wedges. Serve warm or at room temperature topped with yoghurt.
Tips
- Looking for a more traditional flavor? Substitute 3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon and 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg for the Chinese five-spice powder.
- Look to use the best local variety of baking apples, available from your CSA, in farmers' markets or grocery stores for this recipe. If that's not possible, give these nationally available varieties a try: Cortland, Braeburn, Jazz, Rome Beauty or Winesap.
